The Intern Experience

The Intern Experience

My experience as an intern with ShowerUp has been incredibly enriching and meaningful in ways I didn’t expect. From the moment I began working in January, I was met with a team that was not only welcoming and kind, but also passionate about the work they do. They took the time to invest in me, teaching me the ins and outs of the organization and allowing me to gain hands-on experience in a variety of roles. From cleaning showers to helping coordinate volunteers and learning about the inner workings of a nonprofit, this experience has truly given me a well-rounded and authentic look into what it means to serve in the non-profit world in Huntsville.

Working directly with the unhoused population in Huntsville has been one of the most impactful parts of this journey. It has challenged me to grow in humility, patience, and compassion, while also enhancing my understanding of the realities people face. What has stood out the most to me is the opportunity to connect with individuals on a personal level. I feel privileged to have been able to hear their stories, learn about their lives, and see them as people rather than simply a demographic or statistic. Those moments of connection have been incredibly rewarding.

The experiences I’ve had with ShowerUp have shaped my professional and personal perspective. The staff and volunteers alike have reinforced the importance of dignity, human connection, and meeting people where they are. These lessons will stay with me far beyond this internship, serving as a foundation for how I approach both my future career and my interactions with others.
